  • I laid my head on the railroad tracks….Poor, Poor pitiful me.

Y’all remember that song? There’s been several versions, but I like Terri Clark’s best.

Okay, I might be a touch dramatic here. But still.

I had a whole blog post planned about how my Disciple Series, Called By Name, started today and that it was GREAT. Well. It didn’t exactly set the world on fire. The hub, Capt. Ron, bless his heart, keeps telling me it’s good. Ron is contractually obligated to say that. He also told me my haircut looked great in 2019.

But then this morning happened, and it’s a better story.

I was on my way to church, running through my notes, feeling fairly good about myself, my message, the whole shootin’ match, when — and I want to be clear I’m not being dramatic here — the Lord swooped in and said, “Well, Barbara, I appreciate the effort, but this isn’t exactly what I had in mind.”

No further elaboration. Just the one virtual sticky note from Jesus saying, “well, do your best today, dear, but this needs work.”

    Great.

Then I got to church and butchered the last song in front of the entire congregation, which felt like a very on-brand way to close out that particular conversation.

So that’s the day. A quiet series, a note from THE management, and a song I will not be trying again anytime soon. I mean, please — how can I mess up Because He Lives?

If you’ve ever poured yourself into something and gotten back mostly silence, or hit a wrong note in front of God and everybody, you’re in good company. I’m not writing this looking for sympathy — I’m writing it because it’s rather funny in a painful way, and because I’d rather laugh at a rough Sunday than let it follow me into the week.

Next Sunday I’ll sing better. Probably. Maybe. Actually, I’ll probably be fired from singing and playing at church unsupervised, to be honest. The series keeps going either way. Perseverance, friends. Perseverance.

    Keep looking up. ⬆️

    Love y’all. ❤️

  • Well, Hey.

    Well, Hey.

Well hey. How ya doing? Capt Ron and I just got back from an epic almost four week road trip up to Idaho and back to Texas. Almost 5,000 miles racked up on that poor Chevy Traverse by the time we rolled back into the driveway. With two slobbery dogs. So, several states, poor gas station dining choices, questionable hotel room cleanliness — we made it. It was glorious and hard. We’ve been back five days and still tired. Good grief.

But it gave me time to do some thinking — especially through the grittiness of New Mexico. I haven’t got a dang thing sorted out in my life except to keep on keeping on. Be ever proud I’m an American that tears up over the Star Spangled Banner, a lover of animals, family and friends — but Jesus is always first. I’ve lived a long time. I’ve seen a lot. I’ve not lost as much as others, but I’ve not lived as easy as some, either.

Just a gal that never knows when to shut up. Pull up that chair…This could get good.
